Cheshire Ireland

Cheshire Ireland is a very special organisation providing a vast range of services to people with both physical, sensory and neurological conditions, who often have very complex and high support needs.

We provide individualised supports to promote wellbeing, independence and quality of life for all people who use our services.

overview

Cheshire Ireland is funded in the main by the HSE for operational costs but in recent times that funding has been cut dramatically and we are reliant on your generosity to fund our various projects.

We have various items that require funding in the more immediate future such as our Assisted Technology Project which will allow us to set up smart technology for the people we support to give back their independance as much as possible.  Examples of this are things like Smart TV's, Google Mini's, Smart plugs etc.,

Our Vehicle replacement programme - as our locations are not in the usual bus routes - vehicles are essential to get the people we support to their hospital appointments, meeting with family and friends and to be able to get out and about in the community.

We also need to upgrade our location interiors - new carpets, furnishing and also the outside windows, doors - our list is vast and any and all help is very much appreciated by everyone here at Cheshire Ireland.

where your money goes

Your donation will help pay for a range of programmes and services that we provide. This will greatly improve quality of life. There is also a shortage of truly wheelchair accessible housing on the market so renovations always need to be made before a service user can move in. These adaptions involve widening doors, making doors automatic, installing wet floor showers, grab bars, overhead hoists, low worktop accessible kitchens and wheelchair ramps.  We are open to donations of vehicles and of fuel, these are so important to us.  We also provide Physiotherapy to some of the people we support so there are many things that Cheshire Ireland would like to have to support people to live their best possible life and you can be a part of that change by donating to us today.

history

In 1961 Leonard Cheshire set up Ireland’s first Cheshire service in Shillelagh, Co. Wicklow, supported by volunteers, and since then further services have developed around the country.

Initially, these services were supported by local voluntary management committees who oversaw the running of the services and who fundraised locally.

Over time, the Health and Social Care environment in Ireland changed with an increased requirement for governance and oversight. To reflect this Cheshire Ireland developed a consistent approach to the work of the organisation, while ensuring the ethos of Leonard Cheshire’s approach remains relevant.

Cheshire Ireland continued to grow and in the mid-90’s developed centres consisting of self-contained apartments in Letterkenny Co. Donegal, Sligo, Blackrock Co. Dublin and Killarney Co. Kerry. Towards the end of the 90’s Cheshire started its first Community support service in North County Dublin and this quickly spread to providing Community Services in South County Dublin and Cork City.

In 2003 President McAleese officially opened Waterford Cheshire, this was followed by the opening of Dundalk Cheshire and services in Greystones, Co. Wicklow. The opening of Dun Laoghaire Cheshire in Co. Dublin was next and in 2008 Newbridge Respite Centre opened its doors to provide respite to individuals in the area.
