history

In the early 90’s Erris did not have Primary Education for children with Special Needs. Parents as well as Western Care had lobbied the Government to address this need.

The Special Class was officially opened in March 1992. The classroom and toilet were arranged to suit the needs of the children. The cost of the renovation to the classroom was borne by Western Care and by local fundraising.

In February 1997 a higher ‘school average’ meant that a third teacher was required and the Department said that they would give a prefab for the third teacher. An agreement was reached that the school would instead build a classroom specially designed for Special Needs children with the money it would cost for a prefab. This amounted to £30,000. The Department agreed to put this money into bricks and mortar.

There began the construction of a Classroom exclusively for the needs of the Special Children. It took great fundraising efforts to complete this project. The Special Class Unit was opened in September 1998. Today its existence in the community is an achievement we are proud of and we hail the entire school staff for their ongoing commitment to these children.
