The Deaf Community is defined as a group of people who share a visual perception of the world, a common cultural and social experience and use a common language.This includes people who are Deaf, their families and hearing people who share the above experiences and understanding. A Deaf person is someone who is either Deaf or Hard of Hearing and considers themselves to be part of the Deaf Community.

history

The Catholic Institute for the Deaf (CID) was established as a charitable institution in 1845.
In 2007, the name was changed to the Catholic Institute for Deaf people (CIDP). It is an amalgamation of a number of different activities. In September 2021 we rebranded as Reach Deaf Services.

The original establishment of a residential service for Deaf and Deaf Blind Adults in Stillorgan known as St Josephs House;

The boys and girls school for the Deaf originally set up by the Christian Brothers and Dominican Sisters and now brought together under the name of the Holy Family School for the Deaf. Reach Deaf Services also has boarding facilities which provide accommodation for children.

The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Archbishop Farrell, is the President of the company and appoints one third of the Board members, including the Chairperson.
