Earagail Arts Festival

Welcome to the Earagail Arts Festival Legacy Fund

In response to treasured friends and supporters expressing an interest in leaving a legacy to the festival, we created a new donation feature – The Earagail Arts Festival Legacy Fund - solely for the support of future artistic projects which originate in Donegal.

This new platform will contribute to the commissioning and development of artistic projects that have a Donegal mission at their heart, meaning your donation will create performance and commission opportunities for emerging Donegal musicians and artists, Donegal theatre productions, large scale spectacle works, literary projects or countywide visual arts exhibitions. None of your donation will be used for administrative costs but will be solely applied to artistic costs and artist remuneration.

Examples of previous projects and some in this year’s programme which would receive support would include work such as The Henry Girls & The Fox Hunt, LUXe, She Knit The Roof, Foyle Punt, The Mountain Stage, Little John Nee, The Selkie, etc.

If you have any queries about the Earagail Arts Festival Legacy Fund please do not hesitate to contact Paul Brown, CEO/Artistic Director, via email on [email protected].

history

Earagail Arts Festival celebrates and creates a high profile platform for the contemporary and the traditional arts in Donegal.  It reflects the unique character and demographic of the region by presenting an exciting, high quality, bi-lingual programme of arts activities across a wide geographical area of Donegal – from the Inishowen Peninsula, southward to Letterkenny and the Border region of East Donegal, and westward past Earagail Mountain to the Gaeltacht areas of Cloich Cheann Fhaola, Gaoth Dobhair & The Rosses, Oileán Árainn Mhóir (Arranmore Island) & Oileán Thoraí (Tory Island).

The festival was first established by Donegal County Council’s Arts Services in 1989 to help develop local culture and to support the work of local artists and arts facilities, while bringing national and international acts to the north-west.  The festival has grown from strength to strength since then as is now regarded as one of the top summer arts festivals in the country.   In 2004 the Festival was constituted as an independent company with the following main aims and objectives:

1.   To plan, programme, manage and promote an annual, bilingual Irish and English language, multi disciplinary festival of the arts throughout the greater catchment area of Mount Errigal in County.

2.  To present an artistic programme which will be innovative, imaginative and stimulating to its host community; which will actively support and reflect the importance and position of the Irish language among its host community; which will always adhere to the highest possible professional standards in terms of artistic excellence, management, production and presentation; which will actively support the work of local artists and venues; which will invite high quality, professional international arts companies and artists to work in Donegal; which will reflect closely the widely dispersed nature of its host community, will be of benefit to the local community and to visitors alike and will contribute significantly to the ongoing development of cultural tourism in the area.

Earagail Arts Festival is an independent company, which is limited by guarantee and has charitable status.  It is presented in conjunction with the partnership organisations of Donegal County Council, Údarás na Gaeltachta, An Grianán Theatre, Regional Cultural Centre and a host of local arts and community organisations throughout the festival catchment area. The festival has an annual financial turn over in the region of €500,000.

The festival normally takes place over a three-week period each July. In 2019 the dates are from 10th to 28th July.  Presenting a mix of local, national and international artists, events includes theatre, a wide and varied music programme, dance, comedy, outdoor spectacles and family events, a children’s programme, literature and visual arts.

“What Earagail does, and does so rather splendidly…..is to bring cultural events of a dizzying variety…..while also celebrating the rampant creativity inherent in it’s peoples…..it is also a heck of a lot of fun.”  The Irish Times
