Unless you've been hiding under a keg you'll have heard of the perceived madness that is 'Go Sober for October'. I've become a huge fan of social media as a powerhorse to raise awareness for a variety of issues, and in the process - money for great causes.
Needless to say, as I can barely pronounce or spell the word sobriety, I'm hopping on this dry bandwagon to put my sobrrriierrty to good use. Call it a much needed experiment if you will.
Launched by Macmillan Cancer Support in the UK the campaign has already raised in excess of half a million pounds, so it's safe to say people are needing to dry out. Campaign origins aside, I'm choosing to use this lovely month of sobriety to support another wonderful lot, MADRA (Mutts Anonymous Dog Rescue & Adoption) in County Galway.
I've seen the great work MADRA do, having fleetingly visited where the magic happens - they are bloody amazing and they too need your support (even if it is via me not drinking - not to be underestimated as a MOMENTUS occasion) ;)
As Ann Marie Hourihane recently said in her Irish Times 'The Sobriety Diaries' article, while her non drinking friends suggested that any fool could give up drinking for a month, "It remains to be seen whether this fool can... given that wine is very strong catnip for the Irish female" ;)
Please give anything at all to this mad social experiment to keep me on the straight and narrow while raising money for MADRA. Lots of doggies will be happier for it!
