Galway Samaritans

Galway Samaritans have been providing emotional support to anyone experiencing feelings of distress or despair since it opened its doors in 1976. It has over 100 trained volunteers, who come from all walks of life and who commit to keeping the helpline available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Last year Galway Samaritans received over 65,500 contacts from people who needed someone to talk to and someone to listen. We can be reached by freephone number 116 123; by writing to Pat Smyth at Galway Samaritans or by calling in to our branch at 14 Nun's Island, Galway H91 YR27.

overview

Samaritans' Vision is that Fewer People die by Suicide. We work to achieve this vision by making it our mission to alleviate emotional distress and reduce the incidence of suicidal feelings and suicidal behaviour. We do this by, being available round the clock to provide emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of emotional distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.
By working in partnership with other organisations, agencies and experts to achieve our vision, by influencing public policy and raising awareness of the challenges of reducing suicide and by Reaching Out to high risk groups and communities to reduce the risk of suicide.
We are committed to the following values - listening, confidentiality, people making their own decisions, being non-judgemental and offering people human contact.

where your money goes

No-one in Galway Samaritans gets paid. The Branch is run entirely by Volunteers.
Your donation will go towards keeping the helpline going - paying for Light and Heat, Insurance, Training and Advertising.  We have to keep making people aware that the helpline exists and is there for everyone.  Your donation will help us in our efforts to achieve our Vision - that of a society where fewer people die by suicide.

history

Samaritans have been in the Republic of Ireland for 45 years  -  and in 2021 the Galway Branch marked it's 45th Anniversary.
From humble beginnings in St Brendan's Avenue in Woodquay, it moved in the 1980's to it's home at No 14 Nun's Island.
Some of our founder members are still Listening Volunteers with Galway Branch - 45 years of listening and being there for people who needed human contact and someone to be there for them.
