Homeless Care CLG

Caring for after state care youths who are in threat of, or are homeless.

overview

Founded in 2014 to provide care and facilities for young adults in County Kildare, primarily between the ages 18 to 25, who have been in Sate Care and now finding themselves Homeless.  The initiative to form Homeless Care was inspired by hearing Paula McHale, a Social Care Worker working in the Naas area, on national radio describing the extent of the homeless problem in Kildare.  Arising from Paula's interview a group of Naas business people set up and incorporated Homeless Care CLG (HC-CLG) with a view to purchasing a suitable property with the intention of converting same to residential and training facilities.  In 2015 HC-CLG achieved Charitable Status and Approved Housing Status, we also identified a potentially suitable property (the property consisting of an old farmhouse and outbuildings) and made an application through Kildare County Council to the Department of the Environment and Local Government for Capital Assistance Scheme (CAS) Funding which was approved in principle in February 2016.  In 2016  a multidisciplinary design and project management team was appointed with instructions for a design of the refurbishment of the outbuildings to studio apartments and the old farmhouse to communal areas which went for planning permission in 2017.  In 2018 planning permission was granted, and the design team began preparations for detailed design documents which were sent out to contractors to prequalify for inclusion on the tender list.

Construction works were completed in early February 2021 and a License Agreement was entered into for Management of the facility.  Occupancy was taken at a relatively slow pace to ensure a peaceful and tranquil transition from homelessness, with all occupants being trained and educated for a successful transition and reintegration back into the community.  Due to the success of the facility, HC-CLG plan to provide more studio appartments to care for after state care youths.
