The Wicklow Triple A Alliance is a registered
charity established in 2002 to support families in the Greystones area affected
by autism. Since then we have grown to support families right throughout county
Wicklow. Our activities range from 1-1 carer support and advice, social
gatherings and training seminars for parents/carers , lobbying for enhanced
educational and social supports from the government, to running summer camps
and providing low cost therapies to our families. We work with many
stakeholders in the area from local service providers and disability groups, to
businesses and sporting clubs to ensure our members have access to a more
inclusive and understanding community.
Our latest project is the Wicklow Inclusive Communities project which will see sports clubs, businesses and employers come together to avail of training and support to ensure that they can fully cater for people who might have a hidden disability. A hidden disability is one that might not be immediately obvious to the onlooker. This can often cause misunderstanding and confusion leading to stigma and isolation. Some examples of hidden disabilities are autism, acquired brain injury, Alzheimer’s and dementia and also intellectual disability. People who have these disabilities often share common occurring challenges such as communication, sensory processing. This in turn can often leave the person isolated from participating fully in their community. Our Inclusive Communities project aims to provide information to the general public so that they can easily identify the person with the hidden disability and adapt their social interaction to accommodate the persons needs.
