Polio Survivors Ireland

Polio Survivors Ireland works tirelessly to ensure the needs of polio survivors are met, to enable them to live out their lives with dignity. We provide services and support to polio survivors, including aids and appliances to help them maintain their independence. We also provide information on polio and its Late Effects, create awareness of Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) and advocate for polio survivors, of which there are thought to be 5,000 in Ireland, still living with impacts from a disease now eradicated.

overview

Our mission is to create awareness and provide information regarding the late effects of polio among polio survivors, statutory agencies and the wider medical profession, and to ensure that the needs of polio survivors relating to their condition are met to enable them to live with dignity.

where your money goes

We assist polio survivors, who are now in advancing years, by providing mobility supports such as stair lifts, electric scooters and wheelchairs; therapies such as physiotherapy and counselling; and in particular Winter Heating Grants to help alleviate polio survivors’ extreme intolerance to cold. These services and supports enable polio survivors to maintain their independence and dignity despite their disability.

history

Formed in 1993 by polio survivors for polio survivors - the organisation was formed as The Post Polio Support Group in order to assist those who were noticing symptoms of the condition known as Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) or Late Effects of Polio.
