St Nicholas Collegiate Church

The Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas is the largest medieval parish church in Ireland in continuous use as a place of worship, and is at the heart of Galway's life, under the auspices of the Church of Ireland. Founded in 1320 AD, the church has a fascinating history and nowadays provides a warm welcome to visitors from all around the world. It is used as a centre for Arts and Culture, with many varied events taking place throughout the year - the Galway International Arts Festival, Tunes in the Church and visiting choirs make use of the wonderful acoustics in this medieval building.
St. Nicholas Schola Cantorum was founded in 2012, a modern re-imagining of the ancient college of singers, established here in 1486 and which gives the church its special title. In 2012, the Rector, Select Vestry and parish community decided to revive the ancient college, honouring the church's musical heritage but in a new dynamic that reaches out to all the people of Galway. St. Nicholas Schola Cantorum secures the musical future of the church and provides an invaluable musical and educational resource in the wider community.
