It can carry up to 8 wheelchair users and is the only licenced passenger boat of its kind in Britain or Ireland . We also support all people with mobiity issues and those with dementia Email: [email protected] for details

overview

The Lough Ree Access For All Boat initiative is co-ordinated by a not-for-profit community group in the town of Ballyleague-Lanesborough on the Roscommon Longford border who have designed, manufactured and delivered a new state-of-the-art passenger vessel to meet the specific requirements of wheelchair users who would like to travel on Lough  Ree and on the waterways of Ireland. The new boat can carry up to 8 wheelchair users at a time and 5 volunteers have trained up in the P2 passenger proficiency skills set out by BIM to meet the requirements of Boat Masters set out by the Dept of Transport. The boat operates like a very small car ferry with the bow lowering to allow wheelchair users 'roll-on' and roll-off. There is no lifting or hoisting and the design was concluded after consultation with members of the Independent Living Movement and Irish Wheelchair Association. Our community group hopes to run the new boat on a fulltime basis in 2021 under a community service programme and thereby give equality to people with disability to would like to sail. All donations to our activities are invested in safety and training equipment. E mail: [email protected] for more details
