Oisín Ward who is 18, is from a small village called Bullaun in Co. Galway. In February 2020 he was diagnosed with a rare form of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. This is a life-limiting disease. Just as Covid hit early in 2020, like a bolt out of the blue, so too did this diagnosis. Obviously this was devastating news for all who love Oisín, this changed Oisin's life and the lives of his immediate Family overnight.

The onset of symptoms for Oisín was rapid. Within a week he had sniffles, raised glands, bruising & aggressive hard-to-stop nose bleeds. After a blood test, Oisín was rushed to the hospital and then spent 12 months in the Claddagh ward in UHG, under the expert and extremely attentive care of Consultant Janusz Krawczyk & his Brilliant Medical & Surgical Team. The Nursing, Caring, Catering & Cleaning Staff became Oisín's second Family in that year. They Nursed and Cared for Oisín as if he was their own.

Oisín's Chemotherapy & Steroidal regimen started 4 days after he was admitted after multiple tests were run. Oisín has had 16 lumbar punctures to date with Chemo administered through them. His Chemotherapy treatment continues to this day. Weekly trips to Galway Hospital are made to attend the Haematology/Oncology Day Ward where Oisín's treatment is monitored, managed, and adjusted when needed. Oisín is now taken care of and receives his Daily Chemotherapy at his home since February 2021.

Oisín has many co-morbidities because of the leukaemia treatment, his most recent one being Osteopenia in his hips, for which he has been referred to an Orthopaedic Surgeon. This disease, as many of you may know, is a disease usually associated with the elderly. Oisín will have to have a hip (if not both hips) replaced in the near future.

Currently, Oisín's mobility is impaired so his care needs are increasing with each passing day. He is in regular pain so his pain management has had to be reviewed by the Palliative Care Team. Oisín needs a specialised chair and mattress for basic comfort.

Oisín is fully intent on returning to his labour of love i.e. gardening. However, at present Oisín is unable to do this.  Oisín has a passion for coding & cyber security which he is currently studying online.

where your money goes

We, his friends, and family have set up this page to help Oisin feel physically comfortable daily. Also, to help with costs incurred to and from hospital appointments. We are doing all we can to help Oisin return to gardening and coding. However, some help would be greatly appreciated.

Any donation will be welcomed with gratitude to assist Oisín to live his life to its full potential and go towards Oisin future plan.

Future Plan; Oisin Ward Foundation

The future intention of the Oisin Ward Foundation is to provide early support to the families of young adults who find their life's impacted in such a disruptive and uncertain time. It is intended that a care package filled with the basic but often forgotten necessities along with critical relatable information will be provided to support the family in the hospital room.

When a crisis like a cancer diagnosis is given to a family an overwhelming sense of freefalling and loss of control is often the first reaction. Often basic thinking is very difficult, with basic needs forgotten. The Oisin care package will provide the patient's loved ones with their initial needs.
