The children, staff and parents of Kilfenora National School are fundraising to build an Astro turf facility in the school grounds. This will be game-changing for school sports activities and will be a priceless resource for the wider community.
Everyone working hard at keeping the Active Schools flag hoisted high, and this facility will help in so many ways.
Having a safe, clean, well-lit, all-or-most-weather facility in our school and community will no doubt ensure a foundation in fitness and a drive for active social play for the children, and will help the wider community in maintaining their fitness goals.

Kilfenora is located in the periphery of the Burren and close to the Wild Atlantic Way and only 40 minutes from Shannon Airport. Our school's football teams have to travel a short distance to the sports field at The Deanery. However, this has its challenges, as the road is very busy and unlit, making it redundant for the winter months. Thus, we are currently fundraising for an AstroTurf on the school grounds to make it accessible to the community.
Having an AstroTurf in the community has huge potential to attract children, teenagers, and young adults to remain in Kilfenora and make an important contribution to their physical, personal, social, and emotional development. Our goal is to achieve the target value of 84,000 EUR required to complete the project. To date, we received 50,000 EUR from Clar Funding. The students submitted a piece to elected officials titled: What an Astro Turf in Kilfenora Would Mean to Me. It was very impactful for them to hear what this resource means to the children.
7,000 EUR has been received from private donations and we have successfully fundraised several thousand in local fundraising efforts. It is clear we need to spread the net wider and touch-in to the good will of a bigger network. Any donation to support our efforts in raising the additional monies would be greatly appreciated.
Our children are very passionate about this project and are excited with the prospect of developing their sense of individual and group social skills through sport and the all-purpose AstroTurf.

history
Many of the past students of Kilfenora National School will remember playing in the yard, on the court and in the grass during break times in the school day. You will also remember the long walk to the football field for sports events, which pre-Deanery was situated down the Lisdoonvarna Road. For the many years now, the students of Kilfenora National School have use of the local community resource situated at the Deanery grounds which is quite a walk away. It is a wonderful facility and Kilfenora are blessed to have it, unfortunately is limited to use in late spring and summer.
However it is clear that the school needs a new, closer and more fit-for-purpose resource. The staff and parents of the school have sought funding from the county council and the students submitted a piece to elected officials titled : WHAT AN ASTRO TURF IN KILFENORA WOULD MEAN TO ME. It was very impactful for them to hear what this resource means to the children. Though funding was received, we are still short on funds to realise the dream, and have created many fundraising initiatives locally in the past year.
It is clear we need to spread the net wider and touch-in to the good will of a bigger network.
