Purple House Mizen2Malin Cycle 2020

Type of Event : Cycling
When : 24th July 2020
Description :
To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Purple House, we have not one, but two amazing cycling challenges planned for 2020.

We want you to join us as we cycle to the four corners of Ireland to raise funds and awareness of our Cancer Support Services and ensure that no family living with Cancer is alone.

This is the classic Irish Challenge cycling from the Southernmost point to the Northernmost point in the land. The distance between these 2 extremes is almost exactly 400 miles (640km). Our route will be seeking to stay away from Main roads, maximise the scenery that is on offer, whilst at the same time avoiding adding extra km's to this already challenging ride.

Day 1 – Transfer to West Cork / Mizen to Bantry (40kms)

Leaving central Bray the bikes and cyclists will be transported to West Cork (approximately 5 hours) for our accommodation in this pleasant West Cork Town. We will head out to Mizen head for the obligatory photo at this beautiful spot before cycling to our accommodation 40km away. By doing a bit of cycling on the same days as the transfer it takes the sting out of the next day.

DAY 2 Bantry to Limerick 160km

After an early breakfast, our cycle will start in earnest as it will be a big day. Our route will bring us on past Bantry Bay to Ballylickey before we head inland with some very nice scenery along the Lee valley, passing Ballingeary and Lough Allua at Incheegelagh. We continue again to follow the river Lee as far as Coachford before heading more directly North over rolling countryside to our overnight stop on the fringe of Limerick.

DAY 3 Limerick to Strockstown 160km

Today will be another big day. We start the day by taking nice backroads along the Shannon heading north through woodlands and past Lough Ree and Lough Derg before we cross a series of Boglands designated as natural heritage areas. From Ballinasloe we make our way to Strokestown where the scenery changes again as lakes become a dominant feature. We will spend the night in Strokestown.

DAY 4 Strockstown to Donegal Town 125km

A shorter day as we head into Donegal. Today might be one of the best days on a bike you could ask for we ride past Loughs, mountain, forests and we get a view of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s as good as anywhere in the world.

Day 5 Donegal Town to Malin Head (125km) transfer to Derry city after photos

The Final Push!

The Inishowen Peninsula offers some unspoilt scenery and quiet roads as we make our way to our final destination. Arriving at Malin head we will have a short celebration whilst the bikes get packed up, before boarding a bus to bring everyone to Derry city where a final meal and celebration can take place to acknowledge this fantastic achievement and rest in the knowledge that you have just cycled the length of the Ireland an achievement that will stay with you for life.

DAY 6 Transfer from Derry City to Dublin

Transfer back to Bray with the bikes and onward travel to home!
