"No Church is an Island: 175 years of St John the evangelist, Sandymount, Dublin", written by Alyson Gavin Lysaght and Shabnam Vasisht

St John the Evangelist in Sandymount is a unique church. Situated on an island at the top of St John’s Road, it was an estate church built on private land by the Honourable Sidney Herbert in 1850. It is governed by a Deed of Endowment and managed by a board of trustees. Having survived suspicion, false accusations and violent disorder, the church now is a calm and inclusive community to which all denominations are welcome. Today, it enjoys its position as a respected member of the greater Christian community. 175 years later, St John’s still stands proud on its little island in the middle of the road.
