I like cycling. I mean I REALLY like cycling! Cycling has almost killed me twice but I still adore it; it's the freedom and the self-reliance. And now I've set myself the personal challenge of cycling solo to Istanbul. And it's a great opportunity to raise some much needed funds for the fantastic work that the Cork Samaritians branch do day and night, seven days a week, 365 days of the year, where I also happen to volunteer as a listener.
The journey will be over 4000km with around about 40km of climbing as I travel over the Alps and through the Balkans. My journey will take me from Ringaskiddy in Cork to Roscoff in France, then straight across France to Stuttgart in Germany, then south through the Alps via Innsburk in Austria before entering Italy. After that it's Slovenia, down along the Croatian coastline on the Adriatic, before heading inland to Bosnia Herzegovina, followed by Montenegro, Kosovo, Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece and finally a little bit of Turkey in the mad run in to the gate way to Asia that is Istanbul.
I'm hoping to raise 50c for every kilometre I will cycle. This trip is totally self-funded and I have not, nor will I receive any monies from Samaritans. I'll be camping almost all of the time, hopefully avoiding land-mines, wolves and wild packs of dogs along the way.
I would really appreciate it if you could spare a little money for the good work that the Samaritans do and help make this journey even more special and rewarding. You can also follow me on twitter to get daily updates of my location and some of the sights along the way.
Thank you very very much!
