From 10-19th August 2016 I visited Athens and the Greek Islands of Lesvos and Chios in Greece to gather more information about the situation on the ground, call for the effective relocation of refugees to Ireland and support the delivery of vital assistance. My travel is self-funded and the funds donated supported the provision of basic amenities such as food, sanitation facilities, clothing and other essential supports in coordination with local NGOs and volunteer groups. An update is available here: http://www.irishrefugeecouncil.ie/news/update-on-greece-solidarity-appeal-donations-and-how-donations-are-being-used-to-assist-people/5152
In light of the difficult wintry conditions in Greece and harsh conditions faced by refugees there this appeal is still open and we remain in contact wih Greek volunteer groups and NGOs operating on the ground. Significant progress has been made in the relocation of refugees from Greece to Ireland which is warmly welcomed and we will continue to advocate for more action in solidarity with refugees in Greece, Italy and elsewhere.
