I will be participating in a 10,000ft skydive in around 12 weeks time for a very worthy cause - The Irish Society for Colitis & Crohn's Disease. Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis fall under the umbrella term - Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD). Both of which are (so far) incurable & life-long. When I was 8 my Mum was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. Seeing first-hand the difficulties, struggle & pain someone you love has to endure & not being able to do anything about it, is hands down one of the most horrible feelings in the world. Thankfully Mum is an incredibly strong woman & has been doing amazingly well. (Touch-wood) This is the main reason I chose to do a Charity Skydive in Aid of The ISCC. Most people who suffer from Crohn's or Colitis tend not to speak very openly about it as more often than not it is dismissed as not being a lifelong problem - Crohn's & Colitis are lifelong debilitating illnesses. Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn's Disease are often referred to as 'Invisible Illnesses'. People with invisible illnesses are seen as normal functional people. However, they do not always function as such. Unfortunately, some people believe because the person doesn't appear to be physically ill - then they are fine. Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis affect more than 20,000 people, including 450 children in Ireland. Crohn's & Colitis remain under-recognised and under-prioritised throughout society. The levels of undiagnosed cases of both Colitis & Crohn's Disease is increasing in Ireland & this is why awareness of IBD is so important. Crohn's disease is a chronic (long-term) condition that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive system. There is no single test to diagnose the disease. Symptoms of IBD are generally controlled by many different medications - but there is no cure. Some can go through long periods of remission (months and even years), but because of the unpredictable nature of the disease a flare up can occur at any time.People with Crohn's Disease can spend day & night in agony, 2/3 weeks at a time in hospital & need multiple operations throughout their life. One of the main triggers of a flare up for someone with Crohn's Disease is their 'diet'. Certain foods can trigger symptoms in some Crohn’s patients. No one type of food will cause flare-ups in everyone, in some cases it can be offset by something as small as a bite of an apple. The ISCC is an entirely voluntary organisation providing information and patient-to-patient support for people living with Colitis & Crohn's in Ireland. The ISCC depend on volunteers to provide support to other patients. The ISCC is calling on politicians & policymakers to develop a national strategy for Crohn's & Colitis. I would like to thank everyone in advance for their donations both online & offline. Crohn's Disease is something that has affected my family & so many others in Ireland. The ISCC has been going through some challenging times in the last while so every single cent counts! You can find all the information about my chosen charity here: http://www.iscc.ie/ - also the ISCC are actively looking for volunteers - so get in touch with them if you are interested in becoming a member. Lets give a voice to those who feel they do not have any - Engage For Change! Megann x
