Each year since Luke's death we run a clay pigeon shoot Memorial Day where his family and friends get together to celebrate something that Luke had a love for, the outdoors.  Along with celebrating Luke's life, we fundraise for a children’s charity. Since we started the Memorial Day 3 years ago we have fundraised over €5,000 for various charities, Make a wish, Laura Lynn, Barnardos and Bumbulance. This year we have decided to fundraise for My Canine Companion, which trains dogs to assist children and young adults living with Autism. They are committed to helping children with autism and their families gain independence, companionship and safety through the provision of highly trained and skilled Service Dogs. As a small organisation, My Canine Companion provides an outstanding, customised and individualised service which meets needs of each individual client. Their Service Dogs are fully trained to the standard of Assistance Dogs Europe, (ADEu). Each Service Dog costs the charity just over €10,000 to train. The period of training covers the two years from birth right through to graduation as an Service Dog. Service Dogs make dramatic differences’ in the quality of life for children with Autism and their families. Not only do their dogs assist them physically, but these special dogs also become the child’s best and in some cases, only, friend.
