Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. They can be progressive with complicated presentations that can lead to successive radical surgeries. Surgery often involves the removal of some or all of the small or large intestine and/or rectum and can lead to the use of a stoma appliance. The peak incidence of these diseases is between the ages of 15 to 35, with a second peak incidence between the 50s and 70s. The diseases can be particularly aggressive in children and we have seen a 90% increase in cases of childhood IBD in Ireland between 2002 and 2012. There is currently no known cause of these diseases and around 15,000 people are living with this disease in Ireland alone. The ISCC receives no government funding and rely solely on fundraising, sponsorship and member subscriptions.
