Latest Update !!

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for supporting me on my journey to Kabwe, Zambia where I will volunteer as a teaching assistant!

Event Details

Hi everybody, my name is Sadhbh O'Connor and I am a third year student of Philosophy and Sociology in Trinity College, Dublin.

I have been selected for the SUAS volunteer abroad programme spending eight weeks in Zambia, where I will teach English to schoolchildren. I need to raise €2'995 to participate in the programme. I have wanted to volunteer abroad for a long time but I wanted to make sure that I was going with an organisation that focused on sustainable development and local partnerships. SUAS, which was set up in 2003 by Trinity students, aims to improve childrens' lives in Ireland and abroad through literacy. Their International work focuses on training young volunteers to work in Zambia and India, teaching English to local children. SUAS wants its volunteers to gain global perspectives on world issues to share with their peers upon return.

In Zambia, myself and my team will be working with local organisations to improve educational opportunities for childen in the Bwacha slum in Kabwe. Kabwe is an ex mining town and is considered to be one of the most polluted towns in the world due to dangerously high levels of lead in the water and soil.Today there is high levels of unemployment and a low levels of school attendance. I will be working as a teaching assistant in Ben Kapufi and Hope Mukobeko school, where I can hopefully support the amazing work being done and make my own positive contribution.  The schools we work in have little resources and teachers are often unpaid and under-trained. Two fifths of children in Zambia do not complete primary school and 20% are HIV/AIDS orphans. In Kabwe these figures are even higher. I am priviliged to have my education and I am grateful for this chance to share it. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my page, I appreciate all donations so much. Please keep an eye on this for upcoming fundraising events and updates!

Natotela (Thank-you in Bemba)
