Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page on iDonate.ie.
I'm taking part in VHI Women's Marathon on Sunday 3rd of June 2018.
I've chosen to run and fundraise for Thrombosis Ireland, a charity which is very close to my heart (literally!).
All funds raised here will go directly to this great cause.
In 2013 I was diagnosed with bilateral Pulmonary Embolism (PE), which eventually went to the arteries of my heart and almost killed me. I was a happy, healthy 18 year old whose life was almost taken within seconds. I spent approx 6 months on anticoagulation treatment, but I spent a very long time trying to recover physically and mentally after it. Many people, including medical professionals, assumed that I couldn't possibly have any blood clots because I was "too young". The reality is that Thrombosis can affect anyone, regardless of gender or age. Thrombosis is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. I am still not sure of the exact cause (like many others), but people with a history of DVT/PE/VTE will always have a 1 in 3 chance of getting thrombosis again.
5 years on, I am going to do something which I thought would never be possible and do the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon with my wonderful mother, who was one of my biggest supports in my recovery.
Thrombisis Ireland is the first Thrombisis charity in Ireland to ever exist. As a previous patient, I am fully aware of the lack of support and knowledge about clots and I would like to do everything I can to ensure that the situation is better for current and future patients!
Thrombosis Ireland aim to enable all people on anticoagulation therapy like Warfarin, Rivaroxaban, Apixaban, Dabigatran and Edoxaban to live the best possible lives. They aim to do this by:
1) Giving support to Patients and their family (Particularly after receiving a diagnosis) and reducing the isolation that people feel.
2) Increasing knowledge and understanding of Blood Clots, anticoagulation therapy and the treatments available, among those affected and their family.
3) Increasing awareness of blood clots and anticoagulation therapy, among the medical profession, the government and the general public
4) Improving treatment, services and facilities available to those affected by blood clots or anticoagulation therapy.
5) Empowering people affected by blood clots or anticoagulation therapy to take control of their own health in an informed manner so that they can live more confident and independent lives.
I hope you can help me by donating whatever you can.
