Irish Hospice Foundation – Nurses for Night Care - 2019 Cycle Challenge
Yes - another begging letter – but with a bit of unfinished business attached....
Where is it? Santander to Santiago, Costa Verde, Spain
When is it? Sunday 23 – Sat 29 June 2019
What is it? 550kms / 7,340mts of ascent & descent / 22,000 calories burnt off – in 5 days of tough cycling. 110kms / 1,468mt of ascent & descent / 4,500 calories – per day
Unfinished Business. In the 2018 Cycle Challenge in Slovenia I promised I’d put in the effort & pain in return for your very generous sponsorship. You certainly did your bit by helping me raise €4,000 for the Irish Hospice Foundation. I did my bit too, in fact a bit more than expected. The cycle challenge was tough enough but the pain & suffering I went through following a peloton pile up mid-way through, left me in hospital in Ljubijana, Slovenia.
Like a true committed professional (or an idiot!) with the adrenaline flowing, I got back on the bike, thinking I just had a few bad cuts and bruises and managed to finish that days’ final 20kms. But I then found that I couldn’t walk, at all. Off to the hospital, where my European Health Insurance Card maxed out and I knew the cycle challenge was over for me... becuase of a fractured pelvis, a ruptured groin, stitches to multiple cuts and a really bad headache.
The wonderful summer of 2018 was spent on crutches & in rehab with no exercise or cycling until December.
So I have Unfinished Business and will be returning to the IHF Fundraising Cycle Challenge in June. Broken bones mend, cuts heal & the good work at the Irish Hospice Foundation still goes on.
Once again all of my own personal expenses for flights, hotels, food etc have already been pre-paid by myself and I now need to raise €2,000 in sponsorship for the IHF. Once again, I’ll put the effort & hopefully a bit less pain than in 2018 and hopefully, you can help me with the sponsorship.
Every cent of every Euro donated by you will go directly to the IHF’s Nurses for Night Care Programme
The IHF Vision is that – ‘No-one will face death or bereavement without the care & support they need’.
The IHF run a Nurses for Night Care Programme which brings hospice care into the home for those facing ‘end-of-life’ and provides important care & support for family members. This is a vital service for the increasing number of people who want a dignified ‘end-of life’ in their own home.
The Facts -
1. The average number of nights that Night Nursing support in the home is required in a typical end-of-life situation is 6 nights.
2. The cost of providing a full night of Nursing Care is €320.
3. The cost of 6 nights for a typical end-of-life Night Nurse Care & Support Service is - €1920.
With your help I want to raise €2000 in funding for the Night Nurse programme.
With your help we will make a huge difference to the quality of the ‘end-of-life- experience for someone along with their family.
