On September 15th I will be cycling 135km from UCD Belfield to Wexford town in order to raise funds to support Peter McVerrys Trust's efforts to tackle homelesseness in Ireland. The Wexford Cycle is one of Ireland’s longest running and most popular charity cycles which is now in its 29th year. As most of us are aware the housing situation in Ireland is chronic and it's worsening while our government do very little to ease the situation. As of March 2018 almost 10,000 people in Ireland are homeless including 3755 children, the average rent in Dublin for a single room is 654 euro, on a year on year basis Dublin rents are up 7.6% and nationwide the average rent is up over 10% on 2016.
Research has shown a large number of families becoming homeless had their last stable home in the private rented sector, and the crisis in this sector is the immediate cause of their homelessness – landlords selling up or being repossessed, shortage of properties to rent, scarcity of properties accepting rent supplement, and high rents. Fortunately neither I or anyone I know has experienced homelessness but living in Dublin I have experienced first hand the struggles of trying to find a secure place to live, trying to pay rent every month and dealing greedy landlords ..it's easy to see how people can end up on the streets in these conditions without a proper support system behind them.
My participation in the 2018 Wexford Cycle will rais vital funds to ensure that the Peter McVerry Trust can continue its efforts to tackle homelessness and to support the many individuals who they work with each year through their homelessness services. The minimum fundraising target is €250, last year the avaerage raised per cyclist was €650 so that's what I am aiming for. With just under 3 months between now and the cycle that should be plenty of time. Any donation large or small is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance ..you're all pure sound :)
