I'm fortunate I have never lost a loved one to cancer...I know (of) several people who have...and was shocked to learn that every hour someone in Ireland dies from Cancer...It must affect so many loved ones...
I really felt the need to do something and being a former competitive swimmer... So I was equipped to go, to do my bit for Cancer Care West as well as the personal challenge. I'd never actually done it. So when I told my swim colleagues in ATLANTIC MASTERS, whom I also coach, I was 'politely told to go and do it'.
I've really relished the challenge of preparing for this task, thanks to my AM teammates, several of whom have done it a few times. And the glorious weather has made training so much more fun and enjoyable. Even brushing my hand off the white tentacles of a Lions Mane jellyfish has not deterred me.
On the morning of July 21st, making my way down to the start of the 13k swim across the bay I was thinking of many things. Not so much the 13k in front of me and the pain I would go through as this is nothing compared with the suffering of the many who will never get do do this swim, or never swim at all. These people and their loved ones are the real sufferers. I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to do something.
