21 4 2D – remembering James
CBS Secondary will throw its doors open on December 20th -21st for a charity fundraiser titled “21 4 2D”, to raise money for Ward 2D in Cork University Hospital in memory of James Meaney who passed away in June following a brave battle with leukaemia, aged 21.
All in the community who knew James were devastated by his passing but felt privileged to have known him. During his short life he had a hugely positive impact, and the many groups and clubs with whom he was involved are united in their desire to celebrate this impact and to honour his memory. It is no surprise therefore, that when the organisers at the CBS approached Glanworth GAA, Mitchelstown Rugby, Ballindangan Community Council, James’ class in University of Limerick and of course his many friends, the response to the request for involvement was universally positive. All will join together on December 20th-21st to raise money for the ward in CUH in which James received great care during his many days there.
The number 21 is a recurring theme, and a 21 hour spinathon/marathon will kick off in the CBS hall on Thursday December 20th at 3.15pm, to continue until 12.15pm on Friday December 21st. Four spinning bikes and two treadmills are available and participants from the school, Glanworth GAA, Mitchelstown Rugby, UL and the community will by cycling, running and walking through the 21 hour marathon. Sponsorship cards are available for participants, and anyone from the community who wishes to be involved should contact CBS at 025 24104 or email [email protected]. Many people have been touched by cancer and we welcome anyone who would like to contribute through participating and collecting sponsorship. An online donation page has also been opened at http://www.idonate.ie/2142D for the wider community.
With the 21 hour spinathon/marathon ongoing, CBS will host a coffee morning from 9am to 11.30am, to which all are invited. Ballindangan Community Council members will be centrally involved in this part of the events. Any offers of baking will be gratefully received; please contact Anne Baker ([email protected]) or the CBS. From 11.45 music will be provided by the CBS school band and by well-known band “The Fogues”, featuring past pupils Micheal Fogarty, William Fogarty and Ted O’Brien and current LC student Jack Fogarty. Past pupils Ted O’Brien and James Rea will be on hand to lend their own unique brand of humour to the morning as MCs including the count-down to the end of the 21 hour spinathon/marathon.
A raffle will also be held on December 21st for some fantastic prizes including a €100 One-for-all voucher, Munster Rugby match tickets and signed Munster Rugby ball among others. Efforts are being made to have a number of guest visitors join us on Friday 21st, more of which anon!
CBS staff and students will mark the Christmas festive spirit with the annual Christmas Jumper Day, this year in aid of the Simon Community. All involved will be encouraged to bring donations of food, bedding or clothing with will be used by the Simon Community in their work in helping the homeless. Any member of the community wishing to donate any such items to this collection may do so at the school office on Dec. 20th/21st or at the 21 4 2D coffee morning.
CBS invites all members of the community to join with us for 21 4 2D. There are so many ways in which you can show your support – participate in the spinathon or marathon and collect sponsorship, sponsor a participant, donate online at www.idonate.ie/2142D, bake for the coffee morning, join us in CBS for the coffee morning on Dec. 21st, buy a raffle ticket. Help us make 21 4 2D a truly memorable occasion and a fitting tribute to the memory of James Meaney.
Many Thanks for your support.
