Nearly 800 million people - that's one in ten of us – are forced to survive off of dirty drinking water every day.
Every single one of these people are forced to make a decision each passing day; either use dirty, disease laden water to drink, cook and wash with or go without any water.
The risk they face from contracting fatal diseases like cholera dysentery and even Hepatitis is constant – the result of a family member becoming infected with such diseases can be catastrophic for all those around them.
And if this wasn’t bad enough, in a lot of cases, women and young children have to travel miles to collect water from polluted rivers and ponds. In developing countries, people walk an average of 6 Kilometres just to collect water, often putting their safety at risk from wild animals or people who may rob them – or worse. For most of the children, they miss out on getting an education because of the amount of time they spend fetching water.
However, we aim to bring a change. As healthcare students at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, we are working with Human Appeal to raise funds to improve the health and safety of thousands of people for generations to come. We aim to raise €10,000 by the end of this academic year to build 11 deep-water wells in villages where people are in desperate need of clean water. Each well costs around €950 to build and it will supply around 200 people with clean water daily.
This will remove hours of drudgery from the lives of women and children; allowing them to pursue education or work. The gift of a nearby source of water will have a significant positive effect on agriculture. These wells will improve the lives of thousands of people and generations to come.
At this moment, Human Appeal are building these deep-water wells in villages in Pakistan and Bangladesh only. However, if they decide to expand to other countries in the near future, a portion of the money raised will go to these countries too.
