Have you ever heard of Towel Day? Every year on the 25th of May, people (nerds) carry a towel with them in homage to Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.
It's turns out that there's loads of these random days, every day of the year. There's Goth Day, Waffle Day, Spilt Milk Day, Go Running Day and even Hug A Tree Day.
Back in 2017, my colleagues at Showtime Analytics thought Towel Day was strange, so challenged me to celebrate one of these days every day for a year.
I failed, after 1 day.
However in 14 May 2018 I was challenged once again to try and celebrate these days for a year, and this time I'm determined to succeed.
My father had been recently diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and so I decided use this challenge as an opportunity to raise funds for charities that provide care and support to those who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families.
Such high stakes helped focus the find, especially when coupled with the penalty for failure being me having to forfeit the amount pledged/donated so far from my own pocket.
So for the last 11 months I've been celebrating one of these days, every weekday (Monday - Friday) and posting my adventures on Instagram Stories. I'll copy all the evidence of the days into the updates below so there's a log of every day and every challenge.
The support I've recieved so far has been phenominal, from friends, family, colleagues and even strangers. I truely would not have gotten this far without missing a day if it wasn't for them (texting at 11pm wondering where was my day challenge update).
The charities I've chosen to fundraise for are The Friends of St Luke's Cancer Care who support the largest oncology network in Ireland and St. Francis Hospice which provides end of life care to anyone who needed it, no questions asked, no money required. All funds raised here will go directly to these great causes.
I hope you can help me by donating whatever you can. Simply click the Donate button above, donations close on Towel Day (May 25th).
All donations are processed by iDonate.
