Raising funds for Irish Cancer Society

EITHNE’S STORY

After successfully raising 4 kids – and experiencing all the joys and dramas of parenting - our parents dedicated their newfound freedom to chasing the little white ball and climbing the hills of Howth Golf Club. Their social life was dominated by playing the game, endless diagnosis of what went wrong after the game, and late-night socializing with like-minded golf addicts in “the club”.

Our mother’s other passion was literature, she was an avid reader and had a flair for poetry. With a wicked sense of humour, she wrote poems about the game she loved, her family and friends, and her lifetime experiences. No subject was too sacred to be satirised - the mixed fourball, Mary Robinson, and those nights you want to forget. All capturing life’s ups and downs with wit and charm, characteristics that reflected her own personality and creative spirit.

Eithne was regularly asked to recite her poems at golf club events. So popular and entertaining were they that her fame spread to other golf clubs. Eventually they came to the attention of Gay Byrne, a fellow resident in Howth, who read her poems many times on his radio programme.

In 2013, it was a devastating shock for family and friends to hear that Eithne had been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a cancer which attacks the plasma cells within the bone marrow. Nevertheless, with her indomitable spirit she continued to live life to the full. But as her cancer worsened l she was no longer able to play the game she loved and spent more time in Beaumont Hospital undergoing treatment to keep her cancer at bay. In 2019 our Dad was diagnosed with Leukaemia, his health deteriorated quickly, and at that stage both parents regularly attended Chemo sessions and were well known faces in the Haematology day-ward on the 4th Floor of Beaumont.

Sadly, in April 2018, under the wonderful care of the staff in Beaumont Hospital, our father passed away surrounded by his family. After being married for 65 years our mom didn’t have the will left to fight anymore without her Mattie and she passed away three months later in July.

Seeing the impact of cancer on sufferers and families alike during our regular visits to Beaumont hospital, it is hard to imagine how everyone is coping with the added difficulties presented by Covid. The challenges faced by front-line services and carers to provide a humane and respectful setting for those struggling with cancer have increased significantly. Even more serious are the delays, caused by Covid, in the detection and treatment of life-threatening cancer conditions for those at risk.

In memory of our parents, and in order to raise much needed funds to help with improving cancer care in Ireland, we would like to offer a soft copy of her poems to share with you her humorous view of golf and life in general - regardless of whether or not you are afflicted with chasing the little white ball!

Well done Derville, Michael, Neil, and Mark, what a fantastic way to remember your Mum and Dad. Your Mum and Dad (and all of ye) always had such a nice welcome for the Cork O'Flynns when we'd visit Dublin as kids, despite probably not being able to understand our 'Cark' accents, boy :))

Thanks Gary for the really generous donation. Very much appreciated. Mark.
