As part of the campaign to #SaveOurTeachSolais, a group of us are doing Hell & Back this coming June 15th, and are hoping to raise some funds for AMACH!LGBT by taking on this challenging 8k adventure run.
We’ve been training as a group since early February, and have progressed to doing challenging runs twice a week - yes running without a soccer ball, I didn't think it was a thing either.
I plan to share some of our training adventures over the next month (using #SaveOurTeachSolais, #SOTS, #RoadToHellAndBack, #BluebellHill).
AMACH!LGBT are a Galway-based LGBT + registered charity, run by a volunteer board, who are responsible for the running of Teach Solais, the LGBT+ resource centre in Galway city.
Teach Solais has had a hugely positive impact on my life since its doors opened in 2017. I've attended many events in the centre (from Yoga, to peer support sessions, and to workshops on health psychology). I’ve also been involved with the Teach Solais Tribes FC soccer team, an LGBT+ inclusive football team based in Galway city (we’re a mixed gender team who cater for all skill levels and are always happy to have new members).
Alongside this group and all of these events, the amazing people I have met and gotten to know through attending Teach Solais have all played a vital role in helping me to manage and maintain my mental health. The safe, inclusive, supportive and encouraging environment fostered in the centre and among everyone that uses its services, has really helped me through some tough times over the past two years, and it would mean a lot to me to see the centre be able to remain open and continue its fantastic work.
Teach Solais and its volunteers form an important part of my (and many others’) support network, and it would be devastating to many people if the centre were to close. AMACH! LGBT are fully reliant on funding applications, donations and fundraisers and are dependent on a volunteer board and community volunteers in order to keep this valuable service open for the LGBT+ community. In comparison, other LGBT+ resource centres in Ireland, most notably, Dundalk, Dublin(x2), Cork City (x2) receive ongoing funding for core staff, overheads and other operating costs. No funded service is available outside of these locations. Based on their forecasted income and expenditure Teach Solais will be forced to close its doors in November 2019. Teach Solais has become an essential part of the LGBT+ and wider community of Galway and its loss will negatively impact the lives of members of our community and their families.
Any help to save our centre is much appreciated!
Some of the other activities offered by Teach Solais include:
· LGBT Helpline- Galway branch of the National Helpline and mental health talks/panel discussions
· Peer support groups, for example-GOSSIP (Transgender support group)
· Free HIV testing by AIDS West
· Drop-in sessions every Saturday
· Specific group sessions including a Queer woman’s group and Irish speaking group.
· Social & Fitness; Wellbeing events: Meditation sessions, Yoga classes, Book club, Wellness sessions, Self-defence sessions, aerobics sessions, photography, Arts &Crafts, Creative writing & Storytelling courses, Intergenerational art sessions, Sporting activities, including a running club and Teach Solais Tribes FC (soccer team).
