I'm taking part in KBC Dublin Marathon on Sunday 27th of October 2019 .
I've chosen to fundraise for Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust . All funds raised here will go directly to this great cause.

Here is my story...

In the early hours of Thanksgiving, November 22nd 2018, Danny McGee from Drumlish was fatally assaulted outside a Bar in Queens New York.

Danny was the son of my 1st cousin Colleen McGee (nee. Murphy) so in effect Danny was my 2nd cousin, in reality though Colleen and her brother Timothy Murphy are seen more like a sister and brother in our family and Danny was more like a Nephew to me.

It was an event that has left his mother and father Colleen & Don, his brother Brian & sister Eva, extended family and all Danny’s friends absolutely devastated.

In the aftermath of this tragedy the logistics of bringing Danny’s remains back home to Drumlish had to be discussed. Time and again people advised us to get in contact with The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. The family took this advice and contacted the trust and sure enough they immediately said they would help.

The first line in the Trust’s Mission Statement outlines what this great charity does,

“The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the body (bodies) of loved one(s) who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances back to Ireland.“

But in Danny’s case this statement doesn’t go far enough because they did so much more than offer financial support.

In Danny’s case the Trust took on the organizing of nearly every aspect of what was required to bring Danny’s remains home. This included liaising with a funeral director in New York, arranging all the necessary paperwork and arranging flights for Danny & his family back to Ireland.  Given that it was Thanksgiving in New York all the offices that were required to process necessary paperwork were closed for a long weekend and only opened for business Monday 26th of November. Despite this The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust with the help of their local contacts miraculously managed to get Danny’s remains onto a flight that same evening, arriving into Dublin the following morning Tuesday 27th of November. The speed at which they managed to bring him home came as great comfort to us, especially to his parents Colleen & Don.

I cannot emphasis what a wonderful charity KBRT is, I wish it didn't need to exist but our family are so glad that it does and I want to do my bit to help them in some small way to continue their great work.

Thankyou for reading my story and for your support!
