Dear friends,
A very good friend of mine, Pádraig Schaler, was in an accident in America at the end of June and has been in a coma ever since. He was brought back to Beaumont Hospital in Ireland and four months later was flown to Hamburg to a neuro-rehab facility because of the short supply of beds for neuro-rehab in Ireland.
On the 12th and 13th of April I will be plunging into the cold Irish waters in nothing but my bare 'SPEEDO'S'. The challenge is to swim for 5 minutes from the coast of every county with a coast (17 counties in total over 2 days). We begin in Balbriggan at 8am on Saturday the 12th and finish in Bray at 8pm Sunday night.
Pádraig loves swimming so no better way to raise funds to support him along his way to recovery. I'll have to start bracing the Irish waters in the next few days to get into training for the event so here's to hoping that this storm blows over !
UPDATE:
thanks for all the donations so far. For those of you who haven't seen these before, here's two important links to be aware of:
1. www.hospi-tales.com - Pádraig's dad, Reinhard, writes a really insightful daily blog from Hamburg updating all on how Pádraig is getting on and on everything they are going through, including Reinhard and Patricia's efforts to draw media attention to the desperate condition of rehabilitation care in Ireland, and the 6.5 million J1 insurance company that refused to pay out. A wonderfully-written blog.
2. www.caringforpadraig.org - a website that is the home of the efforts to raise funds to ensure Pádraig gets the best care. Also has a lot of information on what happened to Pádraig and all events, past and present, that are taking place to support him.

We're very proud of you Brian, and we continue to pray for Padraig's recovery.
Well done Brian, I'll give you a hug when I see you!

Padraig Schaler, a 2013 TCD graduate from Glasnevin, Dublin, acquired a very severe brain injury when he was hit by a van on 27 June 2013 as he cycled to work on Cape Cod. Nobody was ever prosecuted. He is now living with his family in Dublin. He requires 24-hour care and is fully dependent. All proceeds go to the Caring for Padraig fund, administered by a Committee independent of the family.
