I've included information about Self Help Africa below. My work in Ukraine and Ethiopia and AfricaJust now following three months since the outbreak of war and the shattering of "living life in peace" in Ukraine, the UNHCR has reported just over 5.4 million people have fled to neighbouring countries with the hope of finding safety. People fleeing from Ukraine desperately need our help. Border crossings are filling up and local capacities are overstretched. People often wait up to two days at the border in all weathers.https://www.thesun.ie/news/8472330/ukraine-russia-help-ireland-emergency-irish-aid-worker/https://www.irishcatholic.com/on-the-slovakian-border/https://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/128117/on-the-border-of-war-torn-ukrainehttps://www.offalyindependent.ie/2022/03/11/my-heart-and-soul-are-broken/https://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/128333/self-help-africa-table-quiz-for-ukrainehttps://www.offalyexpress.ie/news/tullamore-tribune/764453/offaly-aid-worker-on-the-border-of-war-torn-ukraine.htmlhttps://dublingazette.com/news/ukraine-border-russian-56423/?fbclid=IwAR3x_EepjkwZya4SqRs6dhyeFff7Rh_xxyNs7H9r1mh3n_agWq6KfM5Cjighttps://www.offalyexpress.ie/news/tullamore-tribune/766738/offaly-man-s-harrowing-week-on-the-border-with-ukraine.html?fbclid=IwAR2BnAVD-_MhCE1zTTGmjICUjx0NHeEAH7sjdzBMfEHUeZHdnFWudK3i_Fghttps://www.sceneingalway.ie/culture-scene-in-galway/it-breaks-your-heartnbsp-the-confusion-the-exhaustion-the-sadness-its-soul-destroyinghttps://www.offalyexpress.ie/news/tullamore-tribune/766061/exhausted-ukrainians-say-they-ve-come-from-hell-offaly-aid-worker.htmlhttps://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/war-in-ukraine-what-is-happening-is-insane-irish-charities-lift-lid-on-flight-from-putins-terror-z7xchsxg0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6f-OBZoWL-8https://www.instagram.com/tv/Cay_8VYu7EF/https://www.tiktok.com/@selfhelpafrica/video/7071670395727809797https://connachttribune.ie/galway-aid-worker-on-ukraine-slovakia-border-as-thousands-flee/It's been three months since the unthinkable happened. I'm writing now just after arriving home from the border town of Vysne Nemecke in Slovakia, a place where over 352,000 refugees have crossed over from their homeland of Ukraine. My heart and soul is broken seeing the women and children cross over the border in droves with each passing hour at the border crossing. It seems we must expect unexpected evil and horror these days. As my Nana Scully used to say, "be shocked or astonished by nothing and be ready for anything and everything." It’s a David versus Goliath type of war between Ukraine and Russia. But we are hopeful - remember who won that war? David, who was fighting for his principles. Ukraine too is fighting for those principles.I have been working and helping on behalf of Self Help Africa, which is part of The Gorta Group, and also as part of the Irish Emergency Alliance to bring medical supplies and equipment into Ukraine and provide food, blankets, and emotional support to people, women and children as they pass over the border, broken hearted at leaving their homeland and loved ones behind.People might be familiar with my work in Africa, and they might be wondering why we chose to help also in Europe at this time. The core of our work has always been in Africa, of course, but down through the years we have developed the skills and the experience to respond to emergency situations elsewhere around the globe. In Slovakia, we are purchasing supplies for onward distribution to hospitals and municipalities in western Ukraine.Self Help Africa, with its local partners and volunteers, is working tirelessly to support thousands of refugees fleeing Ukraine and the many displaced people within Ukraine especially in western Ukraine where we have teamed up with local NGOs and the amazing Redemptorist Priests to provide medical supplies and equipment, food and shelter for refugees. The refugees are mostly Ukrainians, but also include people of other nationalities who were in Ukraine when the war broke out. Border crossings are open, but the flow is often hampered by bureaucracy. People wait in queues for as long as 12 to 24 hours in some places and even longer in other places, which is really challenging, especially during freezing nights. On the positive side, most of the refugees so far seem to know where they are going - friends, family, acquaintances are waiting for them. But of course, this can change over the days as the conflict escalates. If a wave of refugees with no contacts arrives and asks for asylum, the whole situation could become seriously complicated.Self Help Africa as part of the Gorta Group and The Irish Emergency Alliance, in conjunction with its local partners, has had a team working on the Slovak-Ukrainian border since 3rd of March. Humanitarian workers in Ukraine near Velky Berezny—where the situation is critical— built facilities for people waiting for border control. Various organisations have provided toilets, heated tents with food, hot tea and other urgent material aid. In the eastern Slovak village of Vyšné Nemecké, where Self Help Africa is based, there are also toilets and large heated tents where refugees can rest or even sleep. They also receive food, drink, hygiene items and even charged SIM cards from volunteers when they arrive from across the border. We are also monitoring the smaller border crossing of Ubla, where there is also a steady flow of refugees.Meanwhile, on the Ukrainian side of this crossing, Self Help Africa is delivering medical supplies to Victor Francheska Hospital to support those in need at that hospital and two other hospitals in the western region along with supporting Redemptorist priests and their parishes with equipment and food supplies. The people who are fleeing their homes and the fighting are shaken and in need of not only material support but also emotional and psychological support. The capacity to help people and children in need, especially during war times, is a measure of our humanity. War, hunger and poverty are not abstract; they have a human face. We provide practical support to rural communities to allow them produce enough food to feed themselves and trade their way out of poverty. This effort is focused on:Food We help small farmers to grow more food, by introducing new seeds or new crops; encouraging irrigation; providing advice on what to plant, when to plant, how to fertilize and manage land.Developing entrepreneurs We support and organise farming families into co-ops and producer groups, giving farmers more help while they grow, and greater negotiating power after harvest as they sell.Women We support women to set up small businesses through a large network of credit programs, and we continue to offer support long after the loan has been repaid.Climate change We work with farming communities to develop ways of adapting to the changes in rainfall patterns and in temperatures.Self Help Africa - Food, and a futureAnd if you decide to give, you can choose who can see that you donated or donate privately You can also share my page using Share options below.
