100,000 Steps for Cormac
Cormac Connolly Memorial fundraising walk in aid of Pieta House
100,000 Steps for Cormac, a memorial fundraising event for Pieta House, was launched by the President of the GAA Liam ONeill along with the help of GAA legends, on Monday 30th June at the Clayton Hotel.
100,000 Steps for Cormac is a memorial and fundraising walk set up by the family and friends of Cormac Connolly of Castlegar, who died of an inoperable brain tumour at the age of 24 on 25th July 2011.
This memorial walk will take place over 3 days at the end of August and gather legendary sporting heroes to walk in Cormacs honour to acknowledge his determination, courage and dignity in his fight for life. There will be three themed routes visiting All Ireland winning clubs throughout Galway, led by various GAA legends. This will be the greatest collection of GAA Legends in the history of the GAA in Galway giving sports fans the opportunity to walk with their sporting heroes.
The objective of the event is to raise a 100,000 for Pieta House by getting 100 individuals, clubs or businesses to pledge 500.00 each to Pieta House and 2,500 walkers to participate in any of the walks along the routes for a 20.00 donation. All proceeds will go to Pieta House the suicide and self-harm crisis centre which provides free of charge one-to-one therapeutic services for people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts or engaging in self-harm.
Speaking at the launch, Cormacs mother, Mary Connolly said As a family left with the devastating aftermath of losing a son and a brother through cancer, we were keen to work with a charity have the opportunity to prevent families from going through the pain and suffering of losing a loved one. What we do know as a family is the feelings of utter despair on waking up with broken hearts and a void in our home. As an outcome of this memorial event 100,000 Steps for Cormac if we could save a family from the pain and heartache of losing a loved one, it would be a wonderful legacy to Cormac.
Also speaking at the launch was Cormacs uncle Joe Connolly, All Ireland Captain in 1980 An event like this has never taken place in Galway in the history of GAA and will be a monumental occasion for all.
