Greetings from Down Under!
Firstly, I would like to thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page. If you've made it this far you already know I have committed to taking on the challenge that is the Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim. On Saturday, July 20th, I will be entering the water in Co. Clare and making my way 13km across the bay to my beloved hometown of Galway. Having completed this swim as part of a relay team in 2017, it has always been a goal of mine to do it solo. The time is now!
So…the exact reason why I am flying 17,000km across the world to immerse myself in the freezing waters of Ireland and swim continuously for god knows how many hours….it's simple, for the love of it all. And when your bestie of 20+ years declares she’s doing it too, there’s no turning back. You must admit there is nothing like a friendly rival to focus the mind on one’s performance! Not to mention i have FOUR first cousins swimming across the bay too...younger lads but i will give them a run for their money. See ye at the finish line for a family pic buts, I'll have the tea waiting!!!
I am currently living in Sydney and have been training over the last few months in preparation. I have been " a swimmer" and since moving to Australia I can say I have become one again. The muscle memory embedded within me has been found and my love for the ocean and the sport has been reignited.
The training grounds have been none other than the iconic Bondi Beach where I am lucky enough to swim on a weekly basis with my swim club Bondi Fit. Training sessions have consisted of Monday morning sunrise swims at 6am through the surf and swell, as well as Thursday evening sunset swims and weekend in's and outs with my wonderful team mates from all corners of the world. I make it sound easy…and yes this was all delightful when temps were hitting 25-30 degrees, however, as winter has set in and air temps have plummeted to single figures I have been forced to get to know and love my Orca on a whole new level. But the show must go on
I am honoured to be part of this event which over the years has raised thousands of funds for such a worthy cause. All funds raised here through my page and by all participants will go directly to Cancer Care West. I really hope you can help me by donating whatever you can, no matter how big or small. Simply click the Donate button above. All donations are processed securely.
Many Thanks for all the words of encouragement over the past few months and weeks. I arrive back on Irish soil in just a few days and I am looking forward to seeing everyone and to continue my prep with all the others taking part.
