Event Details

Peak for Pat is a fundraising campaign set up to raise funds in aid of Marymount Hospice & Liskennett Farm, which is a division of St Joseph’s Foundation (“Liskennett Farm”). In September 2020, following a battle with cancer, our beloved Pat, peacefully passed away in Marymount Hospice surrounded by his loving family. Pat was better known as ‘PC’ around Newtownshandrum and the wider locality of north cork and west limerick. He was extremely popular in the area and was known for his great turn of speech and kindness. A recent newspaper article described PC as “a man of wit and charm”. As a tribute to PC’s’ life, Peak for Pat has been set up by PC’s family, the Curtin Family of Newtownshandrum – this being his wife Margaret, son Conor, daughter Michelle, grandson Jay, Mother Sheila, PC’s 6 siblings and 20 nieces and nephews.

Marymount Hospice & Liskennett Farm were two organisations which held a special place in our PC’s heart. In his final days, he and his family were extremely grateful for the incredible care, kindness and respite he received in Marymount Hospice. PC was also a huge sports fanatic who was heavily involved in Milford Coursing Club and Newtownshandrum GAA. Additionally, throughout his colourful life he was a greyhound and racehorse owner.

In the early years of PC’s life (1978), he was a dedicated volunteer for fundraising for St Joseph’s Foundation Charleville. One of his most notable and proudest life achievements was, when he along with a group of six others (also known as the “Magnificent 7”) from the local area made the enormous effort of climbing Ireland’s tallest peak, Carrauntoohil, in support of St Joseph’s Foundation. Along with the 6 hour (12km) climb to the summit, which currently stands at 1,039m, the magnificent 7 completed a 200km round trip cycle from Charleville to Carrauntoohil.

The Pat Curtin Memorial Climb*

On 17th April 2021, a group of PC’s family and friends will embark on a charity climb of Carrauntoohil in tribute to the incredible care he received towards the end of his life as well his memorable fundraiser in 1978. The proceeds will be split evenly between Marymount Hospice & Liskennett Farm.

Liskennett Farm is an equine therapy centre, developed by St. Josephs Foundation which enables children and adults on the autistic spectrum or those with learning disabilities to learn, play and express themselves in a stress-free non-judgemental environment. This incredible development provides them with the optimum human and physical environment required to learn skills necessary to live the life of their choice to their fullest potential.

So, Let’s – “Peak For Pat”.
