Latest Update !!

I'm fundraising for Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust C.L.G.. Your support is very much appreciated.

My name is Sharon Mcgrath, and I am a blood cancer survivor, in 2015 I developed leukaemia and received a bone marrow transplant. I relapsed last year and received a stem cell transplant in February of this year. Both the bone marrow and stem cells were donated from my brother Keith.  We are now genetic twins.  This is a gift I can never repay.

Cancer is a huge challenge but to beat it twice you really must dig deep.   I could not have got through this journey without the wonderful support of my husband Ray, family and friends.   I will always be extremely grateful to the wonder care shown to me at University College Hospital Galway and St James Hospital Dublin.  As an inpatient for several months, you cannot but be amazed by how hardworking and dedicated all the team are.  Afterwards, it gives you a new perspective on life and a sense of gratitude for what you have.  I have made many new friends and meet some wonderful people along the way. I appreciate how lucky I am and realise this is not everyone’s story.

There is always reason to be optimistic, this time last year I was starting my treatment in Galway and this month I am doing a fundraiser for the BMLT. It is a privilege to be able to give back.  Treatments and research are improving year on year and supports like the BMLT are invaluable.

Who are the BMLT – they are a charity specifically dedicated to supporting people in Ireland who have Leukaemia, Lymphoma or Myeloma and have had or may need a stem cell transplant.  Most of the treatment takes place at St James Hospital Dublin.  The trust provided me with an apartment so I could be close to the hospital post-transplant.  This provided a lot of comfort and reassurance during a difficult time.  Like a lot of charities, they need private funding to keep them going.

This month we are holding a little fundraiser in our restaurant Pat Cohans Bar and Restaurant, Cong Co mayo - Italian Night to raise funds for the trust. We are delighted that this event has sold out, but many people have asked me for a link to donate online. I was reluctant to go online as I am not running a marathon or climbing a mountain (not yet anyway), but I am alive and that is an awful lot to be thankful for.

Any donation would be greatly appreciated – thanking you all in advance.
