Cause Description

An Cosn is one of the largest community development organisations in the country and is recognised for its expertise in the delivery of lifelong learning, from early years to adulthood in communities that struggle with the injustice of poverty.  An Cosn currently supports over 1,000 families annually.  Having served the community of Tallaght West for the past 29 years we are developing a national profile through our Virtual Community College.

Our mission is to use the power of transformative education through learning, leadership and enterprise to end the injustice of poverty wherever we find it.  A

Organisation Overview
An Cosn offers education and training to over 500 adults a week and early childhood education to 100 children per week. It also offers opportunities to start early years education centres, under its social entrepreneurial franchise scheme.

What we do An Cosn offers adult education to over 600 students annually and a further 100+ students will be provided for in 2015/16 in sites around the country through our virtual learning programmes.  We also offer early childhood education and care and afterschool education to over 500 children in Dublin.

What makes us so successful  An Cosn recognises that students who struggle with poverty experience a variety of complex educational and social challenges.  That said our students achieve better educational outcomes because we provide a range of supports that are unique to their situation, such as learner-centred teaching, mentoring, tutorials and counselling.  We offer free, on-site childcare for lone parents.  These supports play a significant part in the excellent retention rates and academic outcomes we achieve.   This academic year 600 student places have been accessed, including 63% of students engaged in basic programmes, 25% engaged in further education and training and 12% in higher education.  There is a continuous walk in demand for access to education and training programmes which we cannot always respond to as resources are unavailable.
