where your money goes

All funds donated go to the advancement of the mission of Brú Columbanus, our mission is to provide accommodation free of charge to the relatives of seriously ill patients in Cork Hospitals, in particular relatives of sick children.

Our charity is more than just a house or a facility it is a home to the many families that stay here. Brú Columbanus, offers families the gift of time. Enabling them to be close and spend time with their relatives.

Brú Columbanus aims to be the best we can be in everything we do. The families with whom we work, deserve that. Our partners expect it of us and those who support us have shown they trust us to do so. We will ensure all families with a seriously ill patient are accommodated in a calm, caring, welcoming environment. Looking after Families is always our primary responsibility. Being sensitive to and aware of their circumstances is essential at all times.

history

Bru Columbanus was inspired by a little boy named Aaron Kiely, who at just 11 months was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer. His family were living in England at the time. and had to travel some distance for Aaron to receive treatment. On arrival at the hospital his family were given the keys to accommodation, the name of the accommodation was “Click House” and so the anxiety of finding and funding accommodation was alleviated.

Aaron Kiely’s uncle is a superintendant based at Togher Garda Station. A short time later gentleman named Tom Walsh approached Charlie Barry on behalf of the Knights of St. Columbanus. The Knights wanted to do something community based. Charlie suggested replicating the services provided in “Click House”.

Within a very short time and with a lot of hard work Bru Columbanus was established and opened its doors to welcome the first family in October 2005. Since opening we have accommodated in excess of 9000 families.

Bru Columbanus is an independent charity. Charity Number 20060282.
