overview

The Irish Province of the Congregation, now known as The Spiritans and formerly as The Holy Ghost Fathers, was founded over 150 years ago. Today it has over 250 professed members, as well as a smaller number of associates. Members are active in Ireland, elsewhere in Europe as well as in Africa, North and South America, Asia and Australia.
Irish Spiritans ministering overseas are to be found in countries from Angola and Canada to Vietnam and Zambia.

Missions with the longest established links to Irish Spiritans include Sierra Leone where the first Irish Spiritan arrived in 1864, and Kenya where the Congregations works today include first evangelization, education / formation, chaplaincy and development work. Irish Spiritans have had a continuous presence in Brazil for just over 50 years while the newest overseas mission in which we are active is South Sudan.

Key Spiritan works in Ireland include the retreat centre (An Tobar) at Ardbraccan, Co. Meath, the Kimmage Development Studies Centre and SPIRASI which works with survivors of torture.
