Polio Survivors Ireland

Polio Survivors Ireland works tirelessly to ensure the needs of polio survivors are met, to enable them to live out their lives with dignity. We provide services and support to polio survivors, including aids and appliances to help them maintain their independence. We also provide information on polio and its Late Effects, create awareness of Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) and advocate for polio survivors, of which there are thought to be 7,000 in Ireland today. We assist polio survivors in the provision of stair lifts, callipers and therapies to assist those still living with impacts from a disease now eradicated from Ireland.

Our mission is to create awareness and provide information regarding the late effects of polio among polio survivors, statutory agencies and the wider medical profession, and to ensure that the needs of polio survivors relating to their condition are met to enable them to live with dignity.

Formed in 1993 by polio survivors for polio survivors - the organisation was formed as The Post Polio Support Group in order to assist those who were noticing symptoms of the condition known as Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) or Late Effects of Polio.

Your money goes to support polio survivors - as a result of the generosity of donors and funders, we are better able to respond to the needs of polio survivors, particularly in stressful or emergency situations. We provide a Winter Heating Grant to polio survivors who are unable to tolerate the cold and we can help with respite or therapies when the need arises. We also provide aids and appliances, including customised shoes to help keep polio survivors mobile and to help prevent falls.
