Áiseanna Tacaíochta

iseanna Tacaochta (T) is the first organisation in Ireland to offer a Direct Payments model to people with disabilities, enabling them to take charge of their own lives, just like everyone else.  We provide leadership and support to our members - who we call Leaders - empowering them to live with the independence and freedom they are entitled to.

Our goal is to make Independent Living open to everyone, establishing it as a recognised right for people with disabilities.  We aim to change the way we think about disability and to empower people with disabilities to re-write their roles in society.

overview

68% of people who use disability services in Ireland are not satisfied with the level of control they have over their own lives: at T, we work to change this.
We offer Direct Payments to people with disabilities, enabling them to take charge of their own budgets, their own services and their own lives in a way thats never been possible before in this country.  A Direct Payment is a cash payment made directly to an eligible person with a disability to enable them to purchase their own care or support services.  We act as an intermediary between our Leaders and the Health Service Executive (HSE) to make this happen.

"iseanna Tacaochta" translates to "Supported Facilities" in English.  This means that we work to empower people with disabilities to be as independent as they can be and to take charge of their own lives.  Our role involves:

  • leadership
  • mentoring and training
  • advocacy
  • peer support
  • research and evaluations
  • governance and accountability.

We were founded by four people with the lived experience of disability, and we truly believe that people with disabilities are the experts in their own lives.  Everything we do is underpinned by the philosophy of Independent Living, and so our model offers real flexibility and choice to people with disabilities, huge personal growth for our Leaders and real value for money.
