Dublin Rape Crisis Centre

42% of women and 1 in 4 men in Ireland have said that they have experienced some form of sexual abuse. Dublin Rape Crisis Centre is a charity with one mission - to prevent the harm and heal the trauma of rape and other forms of sexual violence.

From our Centre in Dublin we provide services right across the country. We support survivors of sexual assault through their trauma and help them cope with its consequences. We also work to eliminate the tolerance of these violent acts through education, training, campaigning and policy work.

It costs around €2.5 million a year to run Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, which equates to just €180 to support anyone affected by sexual violence each time they contact us.

overview

Dublin Rape Crisis Centre offers support and counselling for people affected by rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment or childhood sexual abuse. The services include the 24-Hour National Helpline, providing one to one counselling, accompanying survivors to Garda station and court, and offering training courses. We advocate for law and public policy that respects the voice of survivors and that prevents and addresses sexual violence.

Over the past 40 years, we have developed and expanded our services, which include operating the freephone 24-hour National Helpline 365 days a year.  The Helpline now offers online webchat support for those who prefer to text,  and offers support in more than 200 languages to those whose first language is not English via the Helpline Interpreting Service.  Although the Centre is based in Dublin, we take calls from people from all over the country who have experienced or want to talk about the impact of sexual violence.

Over four decades, the number of people contacting the 24-Hour National Helpline has increased from 76 in 1979 to over 13,438 in 2020.

where your money goes

All funds raised support our work with people affected by sexual violence in Ireland.

history

Dublin Rape Crisis Centre is the oldest Centre of its kind in Ireland. We were founded in 1979 by a group of women concerned that there was no safe space where those who had survived rape, sexual assault or childhood sexual abuse could get help or support.
