Tintean Housing Association

Tintean Housing Association provides accommodation with support to women experiencing homelessness in Waterford City and County.

overview

We provide transitional accommodation with 24 hours on site support, second stage and long term housing for single homeless women aged 18 years and over, and short-term emergency accommodation for homeless families.
As time progressed and the service developed we soon came to realise that the problems experienced by these women were much more complex than originally envisaged.  While being out of home appeared to be the most obvious and immediate problem needing to be addressed, it soon became apparent that difficulties including mental health problems, disabilities, drug or alcohol misuse, family problems, domestic violence, poor physical health, marital or relationship breakdown or financial crisis of mounting debts contribute to and are factors in individuals becoming homeless.
The role of staff is to provide a non-directive support and advocacy service to residents. Tinteán provides a safe and supportive environment for individuals to address issues.  It is recognised that the addressing of these problems is essential in order for the individual to progress and for the successful transition to independent living.  It is our intention to provide accommodation while supporting these women to access all the relevant support services they may require to enable them to live independently at a future stage.

history

Tinteán was set up as a pilot project in June 1999. The service arose as a result of the Society of Saint Vincent De Paul in conjunction with Waterford Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, Oasis Women’s Refuge and the Good Shepherd Sisters coming together to address the needs of single homeless women, aged 18 and over, at a time when there was no emergency or transitional supported accommodation for this group in Waterford.  The first resident was accommodated in July 1999.
