Our vision is an Ireland in which family carers are properly recognised, supported and empowered.

Family Carers Ireland is the national charity dedicated to supporting the 355,000+ family carers across the country who provide care for a loved one in the home.

Family Carers Ireland is a registered charity (number CHY 10962) and a company limited by guarantee, emerging from the coming together of two long standing charities of over 25 years in 2016 – The Carers Association and Caring for Carers . The merger brings the best of both charities together whilst broadening the range of services and supports to family carers and giving one national voice to represent fairness for carers.

Family Carers Ireland is the representative body for family carers in Ireland. Our mission is to support and to secure fair treatment for family carers throughout the country, to secure recognition of their invaluable contribution to Irish society and to enable them fully and actively to participate in that society.

Your donation will help us to continue to:

Provide in-home respite.

In 2018, Family Carers Ireland provided over 113,000 hours of in-home respite. This service gives carers a much-needed break from their caring role. Your donation can also help to subsidise short respite breaks for carers.

Maintain our carer groups.

Family Carers Ireland has a network of Carer Groups where family carers can meet regularly, where advice and experiences may be shared, and which provide practical and emotional supports. For information on the times and venues of Carer Groups meetings in your area, you can contact your local centre.

Offer our 24-hour helpline for family carers.

Our Careline (1800 24 07 24) is a confidential and friendly telephone service for family carers, where they can access information, advice and support. In 2018, the Careline dealt with almost 4,500 queries. The Careline is entirely volunteer-staffed. Find out more

Deliver our counselling and personal advocacy services.

Family Carers Ireland offers free, one-to-one counselling to family carers by appointment. A qualified counsellor can listen to and advise those who feel issues relating to caring are negatively affecting their health or wellbeing. We also offer a personal advocacy service. A member of our organisation can accompany a family carer and assist them in dealing with enquiries, appeals and other appointments with health or social service professionals. You can learn more about these services here.

Maintain our visitation and befriending services.

Family Carers Ireland is part of the Befriending Network coordinated by Alone, and runs befriending programmes in Wicklow and Kildare. Our volunteers make social calls in their community to elderly or isolated people. These visits may involve a cup of tea, a simple chat or a shared hobby, and all volunteers receive appropriate training. It is hoped that FCI’s befriending programme can be expanded.

Deliver our carer mentoring service.

Family Carers Ireland facilitates a mentoring service, where those new to the caring role can benefit from the experience and advice of those who have dealt with the issues related to their particular role. This mentoring can be invaluable to those adapting to the caring role, and allows former carers the opportunity to pass on acquired knowledge and experience. All volunteer mentors receive full training associated with their role. Your contribution will help to pay for venues around the country and other associated costs.
