Skerries Youth Support Services

Skerries Youth Support Services (SYSS) is a youth-focused community organisation with the simple aim of supporting the young people of Skerries, and their families, who may be experiencing challenges to their good mental health.

overview

Skerries Youth Support Services (SYSS) aims to help young people who are encountering issues by providing information, clinical support and understanding of their challenges within our community.

SYSS operates as a beacon or signpost for young people and their families in Skerries and the surrounding areas by promoting general wellbeing, including positive physical and mental health.

Set up to help children, teens and young adults, in addition to the Skerries Youth Counselling Service, SYSS have also produced an informational booklet and website where parents and guardians can find out where to turn to find help for their children.

where your money goes

Last September SYSS started the Skerries Youth Counselling Service -  a free and confidential service for young people in Skerries and the surrounding towns to talk about issues like depression, anxiety, low mood, stress and more.

The service has been in huge demand and has a growing waiting list. As a result, SYSS are now hoping to increase the number of days the counsellor will be available to local young people.

SYSS relies solely on fundraising activities and is seeking the community's support to provide this much-needed service.

history

Having listened to countless troubling stories, the group’s founding members recognised the need to support the town’s youths through difficult times, and in 2014 they came together to set up the group modelled on the highly successful volunteer group in Kinsale (KYSS).

Central to its purpose is to raise public awareness about mental health and to encourage conversations amongst all generations of the community in an open, honest and trusting way. Through these conversations the remaining stigma associated with mental health will be addressed, finding its way towards a position of acceptance.

Since it’s official launch in 2016, a group of concerned local people - fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, friends and teachers of those who have struggled in life - have become a part of an SYSS committee, giving their time and efforts to steer the organisation’s work.

SYSS works in partnership with several local organisations including the North Dublin Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health, Skerries (SAMH) group. Their work is carried out by volunteers and is wholly financially supported through fundraising activities, events and donations.
