Samaritans Ireland

Samaritans is the only charity in Ireland offering emotional support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for anyone who needs someone. We have been supporting people in Ireland since 1960 through our phone helpline, email and face-to-face support and outreach in the community. We have had millions of potentially life-saving conversations over the past 60 years.

We deliver the Samaritans service through 21 local branches on the island of Ireland (13 in ROI and 8 in NI). Each branch is run independently by a network of volunteers, with support given from the Samaritans Ireland office staff on Usher's Quay, Dublin.

overview

Samaritans provide a 24-hour helpline service for people who are in distress, lonely, struggling to cope, and who are in need of emotional support, including those who are feeling suicidal.

Volunteers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on our freephone helpline number 116 123, and email [email protected]  answering over 600,000 calls for help each year.

Samaritans Ireland is the national umbrella organisation that supports the work of Samaritans branches throughout the island of Ireland.

where your money goes

Funds raised for Samaritans Ireland will support our branch network nationwide, including our 24-hour helpline, and help to increase awareness of the services Samaritans offers throughout the island of Ireland.

Samaritans Ireland funding comes from public and corporate donations, legacies, and statutory funding from the Health Service Executive (HSE).

history

Samaritans has supported people in Ireland for almost 60 years, opening its first Irish branch in Belfast in 1962, followed by its next branch in Dublin in 1970.

There are now 21 branches north and south, with 1,800 volunteers supporting people suffering from loneliness and isolation, relationship problems, financial worries, stress and anxiety, mental health issues and suicidal feelings.

Their dedication is the backbone of the organisation, with volunteers giving their time to be there for others 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even on Christmas Day.

However, this service cannot be delivered without associated costs for technology, publicity of the service, quality controls and administration – the role of Samaritans Ireland head office and a small staff team.

Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide and we work to achieve this by alleviating emotional distress and reducing the incidence of suicidal feelings and suicidal behaviour.

A donation would be a powerful way of achieving that goal and ensuring our service remains available for those who need us most for many years to come.
