Mayo Cancer Support Association

Mayo Cancer Support Association was formed in August, 1999. It was formed by a group of volunteers who recognised the need for the service through personal experience and working with persons diagnosed with cancer. Initially the service was run from the Family Centre, Castlebar. Due to the growing demand for these services and with the help and support of the people of Mayo, on the 14th April, 2003, the service moved to its own premises at Rock Rose House at 32 St. Patricks Avenue, Castlebar.

Rock Rose House is named after the Rock Rose flower, famous for surviving climatic and surface changes, growing in bushy and rocky places, dry hillslopes, waste places and open woodlands where other flora have not had the strength to flourish. The Rock Rose has its origins along the west coast and its off-shore islands and has survived there for centuries. Mayo Cancer Support Association see the Rock Rose as a symbol of survival against adversity.
Aims of the Service

  • To offer emotional support and practical help to people with cancer, their family and friends.

  • To lessen the fear associated with the word cancer.

  • To provide a drop-in centre where people with cancer may access support and information.

  • To ensure that the centre is open to all whose lives have been affected by cancer.

  • To continue to develop and meet the cancer related needs of the people of Mayo and the locality.
