Garnish GAA
- Garnish GAA is a small rural club in West Cork. The club has always been used to operating on the edge but in, recent years, it has succumbed to the social pressures associated with rural depopulation. For players travelling from Dublin, Michelstown is half-way. Garnish is the furthest GAA club from Dublin in Ireland with its clubhouse located at the tip of the Beara peninsula. Despite struggling for numbers, its teams remain competitive in Béara and Cork.
- Remote working has afforded the club a significant transformation opportunity and the new committee is actively seeking funds for the club's strategic development. Any donations to the club will be wisely invested in both coaching and development of its facilties at Cahermore. We are appealing to all connected with Garnish GAA around the club to support our cause.

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Gairinis is situated in the parish of Allihies on the tip of the Béara Peninsula in West Cork. The club fields Gaelic Football teams from U10 to adult, providing an important outlet for the youth in the parish. It maintains a strong connection to Cahermore National School, Scoil Phobail Béara and local community groups through current and past players. We rely on financial support and volunteerism to meet its commitments to the commumity.

With the advent of remote working from COVID19, many young people are choosing to live return to their home communities. This has afforded Garnish GAA a unique opportunity galvanize its membership and reinvent its role within the community. Consequently, the club is undergoing significant transformation and renewal. All funds donated to Garnish GAA will be invested in the strategic development of the club. In particular, the focus for the coming year will be on investing in our young players through coaching in the schools and in developing its club facilities, located at Cahermore.
history
Gaelic football has been played in the Parish since the 1800’s when there were five teams from: Dursey, Garnish, Allihies, Reentrisk and Cahermore, each of the primary school districts at time. Garnish GAA Club was officially founded in 1927 at which time depopulation reduced playing to just two teams in the parish, Garnish and Allihies. Allihies amalgamated with Garnish in the mid 40’s and went on to win the Béara championship in 1948 and three in a row 1951, 52’ and ’53. It took Garnish 25 years for their next title in 1978. Garnish won again in 1979 narrowly losing out in 1980.
Garnish benefitted from Béara Bórd na nÓg. In the 1980’s, the club began to be competitive at under-age. Cahermore National School became a centre of excellent for Gaelic football and by 1990’s Garnish was one of the strongest clubs in Béara, winning a three-in-row Béara championship in 1995, ’96, and ’97. It had significant representation on the Béara team that won the county championship in 1997. Then captain and former Cork senior, Ollie O’Sullivan, still travels back regularly from Ballincollig to play for his club and has been instrumental in mobilizing the current crop of players.
Emigration and rural depopulation has always been an existential challenge for Garnish, the furthest club in Ireland from Croke Park but a strong club tradition and sense of meitheal has kept the green and gold flag of Garnish GAA flying. Áine Terry O’Sullivan, on the Cork Ladies, is the current standout player but her brothers, Brian and Sean, have also represented Cork. The club last won the Béara Championship in 2014, and the three-in-a-row 2016, 2017 and 2018.
