Lisheens House Suicide Prevention Charity

Lisheens House is  a registered charity providing FREE counselling for the prevention of suicide and self-harm in West Cork, Cork City and County. We also provide support to the families of people who are suffering and in distress trying to cope with a loved one going through a hard time. Life is very hard on the carer and they also need support. Lisheens House wants to be there to support families and friends after suffering a loss and are beavered. Grief is different for everyone but we all need someone to talk to. We believe that neither geographical location nor lack of funds should deny anyone access to such services. Our accredited counsellors are located throughout the county. Our ethos is all about community, helping each other and providing a listening ear to anyone who needs it, when they need it.

overview

Lisheens House  pride ourselves on being a community-centred mental health charity that offers free counselling, training, and support to those who are experiencing a mental health crisis and to help those heal who are beavered. Talking about grief is not easy and we want to provide a confidental, safe, comfortable space where you can start your healing.  Founded by Noreen Murphy who have suffered the loss of her husband Donal and her partner Mick to suicide. She has continued throughout her pain to help others and continue to raise funds to support the free counselling services that people so badly need as everyone knows services are number one hard to access easily and number too very expensive.

Lisheens House does not receive any state funding and we depend on our fundraising events and sale of donated goods at our charity shop. All our funds are used to provide free counselling to people in crisis that call our helpline on 023 88888888

history

My story begins in 2007 when my then 39 year old husband Donal and father of my children took his life in 2007, a hard working family man who appeared to have everything but who had been fighting a daily battle with depression and especially in a bad state for the previous two years, unfortunately he lost that battle on the 9th  September 2007.

My life was once again turned upside down when tragedy struck in December 2022 and I lost Mick then 55, my soul mate, my protector, my strength, my rock, my life, and life as I knew it was taken away from me. Mick took his life at Christmas, the month before we were moving into our newly built home. I couldn’t face in the door. This shook me to the core. I went home to my mother, my only place of safety and security. I founded Lisheens House in 2014 to help people and prevent death by suicide and I could not come to terms with loosing Mick. My grief was and is overpowering. The strength of my mother and sons are pulling me through this and I realised I cannot simply give up and my aim is to continue to support people and their families.

Noreen has first hand experience of living with someone with a mental health issue and of living with grief. Grief is overpowering, crippling and life altering. From the simple thing of getting dressed becomes too much, to turn up for work, put food on the table and try and get on with everyday life can be like having concrete blocks tied to both legs, and each step is like climbing a mountain. That is why Noreen is adamant that Lisheens House is going to be there to help other people survive and potentially thrive. Everyone needs someone to talk to and its important to have a safe, comfortable, confidential and healing environment to work through your grief. Talking about death by any means is difficult but when a loved ones dies by suicide, its like a tsunami of emotions.  Grief I learned is Love, grief is the terrible reminder of the depth of our love, grief and love are forever intertwined, that the deal, that's the pact, when you loose people you love the grief is the enormity of that love.
